SMART Recovery offers both face-to-face and online meetings. The big advantage of online meetings is for people who do not have a local meeting, though some people also like the anonymity. We currently have meetings most days, and our friends in the USA also run meetings.
For all online meetings please arrive 15 minutes early. Headsets are strongly recommended. Meetings are appropriate for newcomers to SMART or Family and Friends. If possible please review the ‘SMART For Life’ material on the Training platform prior to your first meeting (register on the Community, login and select ‘Training’).
All times listed are in Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)/British Summer Time (BST).

Attending an online meeting
Everyone participating in the online meetings will need speakers or a headset so that they can hear the Facilitator and other participants talking. The simplest way of checking in advance of the meeting whether your speakers will work, is to visit the BBC News website and check if you can hear videos. If you cannot hear these, you will need help with your computer before coming to the meeting.
If you can hear, but do not have a microphone, you can still participate using text. This works, but if you want to make good use of the meetings a headset such as those below is a huge improvement.
Problems accessing the meeting?
If you get a blank screen when you try and access the meeting, there are a couple of things to check.
You need ‘Adobe Flash’ installed, which you probably already have but it might be out of date. Use this Adobe site to check whether it is installed – if it reports you have Flash earlier than 10.1 you must upgrade. If it is less than 11, you are a bit out of date and might benefit from upgrading anyway.
Supported browsers include: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or later (32 bit only); Mozilla Firefox 3 or later; and Google Chrome. If in doubt, it might be worth upgrading. We tend to recommend Google Chrome which also works well with our new website!
Buy a headset
To participate fully in the online meetings, please use a headset. These work much better than a microphone and speakers on the computer itself, which tend to cause ‘feedback’ and a nasty echo. If you buy through the link below SMART Recovery gets a small percentage of the purchase price.
